Hello fellow Terrarians! Do you remember a year ago when Terraria was finally released on Steam for all the world to see and play? Do you remember how you first discovered Terraria? Do you remember the first time starting it up and learning the ways of Terraria? You couldn't have forgotten right?
Well, in case you do not, we bring to you the memories of other Terrarians and their first experiences with the game we all have in common. We were waiting for the opportunity to pick out some really great entries from the raffle contest and present them to everyone!
My beginnings with Terraria were very awkward. I was introduced to it by my older brother. When I first saw him playing it, I thought, “Wow, this looks rather boring.” However, my brother is extremely annoying and tends to talk about the video games he plays all the time. After a while, I started to become interested. I kept hearing talk of an “Eater of Worlds” and “corruption”, and these piqued my curiosity. So, in the end, my little brother and I bought Terraria. My little brother was the first to play it, so I had to wait my turn.
Unknowingly, we had bought it on the exact date of the 1.0.6 release.
I decided to make my player rather conservative, choosing the standard hair style, hair color, and skin; and giving him a red shirt, black pants, and black boots. Following my brothers’ advice, the first thing I did was find wood to build a work bench and house. It was rather annoying finding all that wood, but it paid off. Soon I had a quaint, little house, and a Guide, who would later be named Jake.
I wanted to get stronger, so I started looking for materials. I eventually found some veins of copper and silver, and was able to craft armor, weapons, and gathering equipment. After that, I moved further away from the safety of my house.
That’s when I discovered The Corruption. At first look, it wasn’t that bad; I had seen purple grass in other games. That was until I saw my first Eater. Their big pincers looked menacing. Thankfully, I was easily able to defeat them with my Silver Sword.
I can hardly believe how far Terraria and I have come. When I began, I never imagined I would become so powerful and respected in the community. I’m so proud of both of us and I hope that feeling of pride will continue far into the future.

Ahh, my first time in Terraria was glorious, and not filled with many noob mistakes. I had been previously watching a couple Let's Plays and Walkthroughs on it, but I tried to keep the game spoiler free for myself. Not that the spoilers I had gotten made the game any worse, it was a beautiful game full of tongue in cheek references, right from the get go I knew the game took itself less seriously than most big developer games, and I liked it. Ohh, and don't get me started on the cute little graphic style, and the slimes, instantly becoming my most loved and hated enemy in the game. I adventured and explored, I fought and mined like any good Terrarian.
My house upgrading from a little wooden bow in the middle of no where, into a massive fortress adorned with gold and silver, tall towers stretching high into the sky, or so I thought, it still was no more than a little stone bow with a couple furnishings here and there. It was not the grandeur of a great Minecraft Castle, or the beauty of a Terrarian tree house, but damn me if it didn’t feel like a second home. Also the NPCs were a welcome touch to the game, it feel as if you actually progressed in the game, not just spent your time in a 2D lego simulator.
And the feeling of alpha male status when you finally create your fist set of sliver armour, and understand why people say this is the best indie title of a couple years. The amount of epic just escalated with finally taking down the Eye of Cthulhu and then the Eater of Worlds, shadow armour, mining the meteorite without an obsidian skull, and blowing myself up a couple times in the process. Then finally the Skeletron, defeat after defeat, until finally I taste sweet victory, the loot of the dungeon and finally endgame items. Only to then wipe clean my character, delete the world and start a new one. A new adventure was calling for Lucama.

Upon first glance it would seem I had stepped into a pixelated world made entirely for the purpose of giving someone who has a fear of squares a panic attack, but even after the options screen had crashed my game twice and my hand – longing for the use of the arrow keys - was uncontrollably smashing the WASD buttons in hope of some form of movement in a direction other than a slimy death I was confident that there was something this game was hiding from me.
With some getting used to I finally managed to brutally pummel down a tree with my axe whilst simultaneously massacring the onslaughts of enemies, and to my surprise (despite the horrendous controls) I was actually enjoying myself. So, being a natural Minecraftian, I smashed together a house just as the moon was setting and I could see monsters coming thick and fast off in the distance. Trouble is, I needed some adventure. Regardless of the fact that I would most likely be eaten alive I headed out into the darkness, sword at the ready. As I drew closer I lifted the sword above my head and all of a sudden I felt invincible; nothing was going to stop me now –
Bluescreen.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far...oh wait wrong story. I discovered Terraria when I started watching OMFGcata and Totalhalibut on youtube. It looked like they were having a lot of fun with it, and me having a passion for sidescrollers decided to buy it. After waiting about three days time for my dad to actually get around to buying the game, I played it and started building with wood and stone and bawling with slimes and zombies. as i started finding better minerals i started to upgrade my home. What was first a simple wood and stone structure has evolved into charizar...er...a complex fortress made of gleaming silver bricks, and thats just my house. my friends have spectacular homes as well, courtesy of yours truly.
One castle is a paragon of darkness hidden deeply in the corruption. Another is a castle surrounded on all sides by lava in the unwritten eleventh level of hell. Lastly, there is the white tower, a lovely castle perched on top of a sky island that pierces the very heavens. Today, i look back upon all I have created, and am pleased with my own craftsmanship. I wish I could relive it all again for the first time.

I spawned on a small platform made off grass. A platform made of squares. The green and small squares. The first moving thing is not Brad - My epic guide. It is a slime... Wait what is that!?
A BUNNY!? So cute... WHAT WHAT?!
The bunny did just explode. The stupid blobby green thing crushed it.
I had to avenge the death of my friend Fred - The bunny. So i clicked one of my random keys and got the Axe equipped. I ran to the place my good pal just got burned to death... Not burn to death but... However. I started to click everywhere on my screen in panic to get that perfect hit. Paul - the slime called for reinforcement. His friends John and mat joined. I fell down to a hole.
In the small little room i got trapped. The three friends ate me up. Me and Fred was reunited again, on the respawn.
Then I deleted my map and created a new map. Then I started my Let's play with no experience at all.
I always hear the blobby sound in my dreams and then i see the blood flying everywhere.

My Terraria story is fairly simple. A friend of mine from school gifted to me on Steam as a birthday present, and I was glad to have it since I'd seen Let's-Plays and tutorials of it from some of my YouTube subscriptions. I'd seen some of the amazing work people had done in it, and wanted to play too. I fired it up immediately, created the character I use to this day, and had my first chat with the Guide. I fell in love instantly. Not with the Guide, mind you, but the game. I was a Minecraft player at the time, but after just a half hour of Terraria I dropped Minecraft like a bad habit and haven't looked back since. The music was peppy, but dangerous at times. The art style was eye-catching and enjoyable. The game mechanics were perfect, and I actually felt like I was progressing instead of just spinning my wheels.
Every new exploration felt like a step forward. I wanted to keep going forward. I wanted to keep going forward so much, in fact, that by the time I had finished my first session I had gone from a peasant in rags (but with very snappy hair) to running around in full Shadow Armor. I was so enthralled with Terraria, that I hadn't even noticed I had played for so long that first night I got it until I looked out my window and saw the sun! Terraria to me perfectly encapsulates the spirit of adventure. The fun of seeing new things, having close scrapes, finding new resources, making things, and then walking a little further down the path and starting the whole process anew.

One of our most talented artists is still pumping out a lot of beautiful and amazing Terraria Art work. Suika started the Art thread back in June 2011 and is one of the very few epically large art threads that is still around today.
Here is some of Suika's latest masterpieces and make sure you check out Suika's Fanart Thread!
Have something you feel is worth a feature? Feel free to PM confuzzledyma (art/maps/misc.), ahamling27 (mods/tools/maps), or I for (videos/mods/tools/art).

This week's CC theme is Coastal Towns: Lighthouses, docks, harbors, fishing. How does the sea inspire you? Do you think of cold, northern coasts or tropical, sandy beaches?
There is much to see, create, and discover in the world of Terraria, so the aim of this recurring piece is to focus on a small part of it and see what you all have come up with.
Next week's theme is Cartoons: Recreate a scene from your favorite animated series or movie, or design a themed town around it! (Can you tell which entry this week inspired this theme?)
To submit images or videos, or to suggest a theme for a later week, please post directly on my profile.

- Width of 525px or more is preferred - I can work with more, but less is difficult for my post flow.
- Thread links are best, so people can go directly to your galleries and comment. Other image links are accepted as well still.
- Compendiums go out Wednesday or Thursday, it depends on my schedule at the time. For best results, submit by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning at the latest.
Back in February, Redigit had taken his leave from Terraria after his wife gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The marked the end of Terraria updates, but honestly not a bad ending since he brought us some amazing patches for free, with bug fixes and a ton of new content.
Early this morning, and again this afternoon we spotted Mr. Redigit browsing the forums. Not only was he browsing, but had also changed his status to "Planning something big.. Today at 1:08 AM" and had been caught browsing a few suggestion threads on the forums.
What do you guys think about this mysterious appearance and this major status change in his profile? Do you think Redigit is back for one last exit or do you think hes just a master at trolling? Share your comments with us below, we'd love to hear what you think!

Today we are featuring the survival map The Cloud Layer, by TerrariaOnline.com forum meber MrCheese911. The Cloud layer isn't your typical island based survival map and exploring this large world will take a good amount of time.
Since this is a survival map, there really aren't any rules. The game plays like vanilla Terraria, but you won't be starting out emptyhanded. Ore's and treasure chests are scattered all around this world and can really help speed up your progression through the game. Even tools like an anvil and furnace are supplied right at the start, and I really appreciated the head start that gave me.

There a good helping of islands to discover as well. From large arenas full of traps and monster spawns, to abandoned villages. Of course there are the usual corruption and jungle islands, but they are definitely outnumbered by unique and unusual islands.

I asked MrCheese911 some questions and he was kind enough to answer:
ahamling27(AH): Is this the first map you have made for Terraria?
MrCheese911(MC): This is my first Terraria map that I have made, but I have made maps in other games too.
(AH): What was one thing you learned about creating a map that you learned while making The Cloud Layer?
(MC): I learned many things making the map, however, the one that sticks in my mind is that I could only seem to have one statue (with a timer) on a single switch. This caused problems making my arena because I had to make sure the wires didn't collide with others and I had to have lots of switches for the different wire paths. There is properly a workaround but I'm a wire noob.
(AH): What is your favorite part of this map?
(MC): My personal favorite part of the map is the arena because I like challenges and fighting mobs.
(AH): What was the hardest thing to implement into this map?
(MC): Again, the wiring was the hardest part, however I also found it was hard to balance the gameplay with chests, ore and progression overall (still could do with some work).
(AH): Are you working on another map? Perhaps a sequel?
(MC): I am currently focusing on adding a hard mode side of my map which will pretty much double the play time of the map. I am also trying to find a way to fix the wall of flesh bug that occurred in PsiSyndicates playthrough.

If you like to play vanilla Terraria(and who doesn't?) this is the type of map for you. It's also a good map to spend quite a bit of time in, because of the nature of gathering all your resources. At the same time though you might run into a treasure chest and come swinging away with a Phaseblade. For more information or to download this map, click here.
