Copy/Pasted some tips.
Terraria uses 2x2 pixel artwork, so try sticking to that.
It doesn't have to be 100% 2x2, sometimes we feel like adding smaller details, so it's ok to go 1x1, I usually only do this on the inside of items. I prefer to keep 2x2 'Outlines'
Also be wary of alignment, use a guide tool, kind of like a graph. Photoshop has this tool, so it's possible for other alternate programs to have this as well.
