- Being a Varler
The name Varler has a little backstory behind it. Several years ago, when I used to play World of Warcraft, I was very picky about my character names. It could be nothing silly, nothing as a reference; it needed to be something original and memorable like a real name.
I chose the letter V because V is cool. Then I chose a random vowel, A, since English names generally have a vowel after the first consonant. Then, R, because R is a very common consonant in the English language. I couldn't choose N or T because those would spell out real words, van and vat respectively. Additionally, they are letters that are often found at the end of an English word, and I wanted a longer name.
I had "Var" so far. One more syllable. I wanted to retain the emphasis on their first syllable, since names sound better that way in my opinion. The next syllable would have to be less "punchy", so no C, no T, no K, etc. I settled on L because it blends nicely with R. Now what? I had "Varl". Too many consonants. Needs another vowel ASAP! What else than the trusty E? Can't go wrong with the attention whore of the English dictionary.
The last R was completely R-bitrary (I AM PUNLORD) and there was no thought put into it. But after I put it in, I noticed a nice sense of parallelism within the name. Thus, I became the Human Warlock, Varler.
I began to like the name so much that I began to use it everywhere.
---About My Personality---
As a physical person, I'm slowly graduating from the "indistinct" category. Possessing disturbingly average characteristics, I'm the kind of guy who blends easily within a crowd, although ironically, I'll do everything I can to escape one due to my antisocial tendencies.
I also tend to be excessively introspective and reflective. Sometimes I make my own quotes. My teachers jokingly say I should become a philosopher, but I reply saying that "philosophy doesn't pay the bills". Unfortunately those deep thought processes do not perpetuate themselves when concerning my future... I still don't have a driver's license, nor do I know what I want to do with myself post-school and in life in general.
I am generally helpless in terms of real-life human interaction. I am far more suited to communication that does not require face-to-face contact, such as this very monologue that you are reading. My communication is slow. I take a long time to develop my thoughts, and it doesn't help when someone's trying to pry them from you before they're complete. This is kind of a grotesque analogy, but my public speaking is like delivering a baby: a beautiful miracle when it goes right, but horribly painful to get out, and scary when it comes out too early.
I value weighted marginal benefit over anything else. Allow me to explain. Benefit comes in many forms: happiness, helpfulness, progress, kindness, wellness, etc. In this case, marginal benefit means the additional benefit created through a decision. These increments of benefit are then weighted by myself, increasing in value the closer I am physically, socially, or mentally, to the area in which the benefit is created. Essentially, I value measurable goodness.
I detest excessive formality and pointless tradition with a passion (unfortunately this may cost me a job a few years down the road). I am also the only human on planet Earth that genuinely enjoys puns.
My defining characteristic is determination. I'm not smart. I'm not inherently good at anything. I'm just really good at developing my own abilities if I find a motivating reason to do so.
tl;dr: I'm a socially awkward nerd who just wants to have fun and be loved.
---Stuff You Actually Care About---
I've been making robots for FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) for the past three years, using artistic and industrial CAD software for the past two, and I've been experimenting with Web design and Game design as of recently.
I am an admin on the 2Dforts Terraria server. I have over 1500 hours logged into Terraria, but I haven't been playing much recently. Used to be pretty amazing at PvP, but I probably suck now...
I'm also a huge Touhou fan. A friend explained to me that maids can stop time, swords can cut moons in half, and idiots will shoot icicles in the wrong direction in the magical world of Gensokyo. I really have no idea what happened since then, but now I know the personality traits of more Touhou characters than I do friends in real life. Heh.
Finally, the majority of my free time is wolfishly consumed by osu! I've developed a taste for music genre games, and I've tried quite a few this past year. I can safely say that osu! is my favorite. Free, fun, challenging, and to top it off, my fingers are stupidly strong now.
---That's all for now!---
