I was just thinking, what is the point really of having a bunch of different chainsaws in the game when there's really just one kind of wood.

It's not like there's a progression of trees where you need better axes to cut them down like there is with ore.

Maybe at the very least give us Ebonwood and Pearlwood. And make it so you need at least a chainsaw to cut those down.

But ideally, I'd like to see one type of tree for each biome and one type of wood from each tree:

    Forest - Oakwood
    Snow - Pinewood
    Jungle - Mahoganywood
    Corrution - Ebonwood
    Hallow - Pearlwood

I like the Ebonwood and Pearlwood idea!
Never thought of that. Corrupt trees and hallow trees definitely should give different woods when they're chopped down.

I support, I find it really wierd how corrupt trees drop absolutely fine wood.

Mind if I expand on suggestion?
I can do sprites for the new trees and stuff!
    Tree.png Normal Tree
    Ebonwood_Tree.png Ebonwood Tree
    Junglewood_Tree.png Junglewood Tree
    Pearlwood_Tree.png Pearlwood Tree
    Junglewood.png Junglewood
    Pearlwood.png Pearlwood
    Wood.png Wood
    Pearlwood_Bench.png Pearlwood Bench
    Work_Bench.png Wood Bench
    Pearlwood_Table.png Pearlwood Table
    Wooden_Table.png Wood Table
    Pearlwood_Block.png Pearlwood Block
    Wood_Block.png Wood Block
    Pearlwood_Sword.png Pearlwood Sword
    Wooden_Sword.png Wood Sword

Those are just a few examples, I think maybe I should saturate Jugnlewood a bit more though.

This came across my mind as well, which is why I never bothered with the chainsaws cuz molten hamaxe (only molten anything I have now) Works just fine.

And the various woods would really look great when making houses and such.

Holy crap, I love those. The new wood blocks would be epic for making medieval themed houses.

I think the junglewood needs a bit more of a difference though. What do you guys think?

Though really it would be more beneficial to have several types of wood/trees:

    Normal Biome:
    • Pine
    • Oak
    • Birch
    • Yew
    • Willow (Near water)
    Corrupt:

    • Corrupted Pine
    • Corrupted Oak
    • Corrupted Birch
    • Corrupted Yew
    • Corrupted Willow (near water)
    Jungle:

    • Mahogany
    • Teak
    Hallowed:

    • Hallowed Pine
    • Hallowed Oak
    • Hallowed Birch
    • Hallowed Yew
    • Hallowed Willow (Near water)
Different woods could be used to make different types of Furniture :p
Since Mahogany and Teak are usually prestigious woods :3

    That seems overly complicated.

I'm fine with one kind of wood per biome.

I think maybe 3 in forest, 2 in jungle and 1 in corrupted and 1 in hallow.

Well, I think you could do:

    Forest - Oakwood
    Ocean - Palmwood
    Snow - Pinewood
    Jungle - Mahoganywood
    Corrution - Ebonwood
    Hallow - Pearlwood

The only reason multiple types of trees would be more beneficial is because different woods are usually beneficial for different things... The more varied trees would increase the visual impact of the game

Well, visually different wood in one biome is fine, but I really don't want 5 different stacks of wood in my inventory.

i support the idea, but don't at the same time. i have enclosed spheres in my world that are lined in wood to keep out corruption and hallow so i have some pure places, and if Ebonwood and Pearlwood were implemented, then they would most likely be corruptable and hallowable. making the only materials you can build houses and/or purification spheres bricks, which are a bit harder to make then just lumber jacking. So only if normal, player-placed wood was left untouched by hallow and corruption would i support.

    End unless Edit.

Wood cannot be corrupted as it is a man-made material (planks)
Trees CAN be changed if the blocks the are ontop of are changed, but wood blocks cannot.

Also, I will be making new sprites and stuff soon.

    Spritesheet.png
Now I need a volunteer to recolor all the items according to the tree :p

hmmm... so one thing that could be done, is to scrap the metal bows. (copper-molten fury) because well.. metal bows don't really make sense. and have the different wood be made to make stronger and stronger bows. but require say a gold axe to chop down the wood which would be required to craft the current gold - equivalent bow. and im sure other wood tools or replacements for metal things that would make more sense as wood could be devised ;) anyone catch what im saying here? :D

I like the idea, but the devs would have to do A LOT of things/change stuff to get this to work. Don't expect it soon....:)

    Love it.

You could also craft wands/staffs out of wood. And spears should take a mixture of wood and metal.

Or for places where having trees doesn't make sense, you could use bones. Bones from the Dungeon, Demonbones(off the Bone Serpent) from the Underworld, etc.
