Just out of curiosity, will be deploying overseas soon, and I won't have access to internet very often. In my downtime I wanted to give this game a shot, but if singleplayer is not available without internet, I wasn't going to bother.

    Thanks very much!

    Nope you don't.
Steam is just a mediator, it doesn't need to authenticate.

Just be sure to, while you have internet access, set Steam to save your login info, then use the menu in Steam: Steam > Go offline...
Then you should be able to access your Steam games without internet access. Just be sure to "work offline" the next time you start it up, when it asks, or it'll be in online mode again.
I'm not sure if it needs a connection to be able to first switch into offline mode, or not..

I find that I do need to launch Terraria from within Steam. Running terraria.exe by itself is not working for me.

The TerrariaWS wrapper used to be able to do so; but it doesn't work anymore since 1.0.3 (which made it obsolete).
